Anastasia Hera joins us in celebrating her latest single “Clarity” as well as discussing the power of social media for songwriters all over the world:
We are stoked to have you today. Tell us about your fall season so far! What are you up to?
Fall has been comfortably busy so far. In addition to pushing my latest single, “Clarity,” I’m branching out: making music for non-profit organizations, performing for some great young women at the University of Texas, blogging, and rocking some virtual performances with my band The Heroes.
Performing new material vs old?
The beautiful part about working with a band is that you can rework, remix, and repurpose songs and make them new! These days, I’m performing a combination of both. I’m hearing my music with new ears and falling in love with it all over again.
Biggest challenge you’ve had to overcome as a songwriter?
I once read a statistic which claimed that 85% of music listeners don’t pay attention to lyrics. That’s tough for a songwriter, because we tend to put so much thought and so much of ourselves into our work. The biggest challenge I’ve had to overcome as a lyricist was overwriting. Learning to say more with fewer words, and to streamline my thoughts, this marked a huge turning point for me.
How does social media enhance your career?
Social media is a great tool, if we choose to use it as such. I use it to communicate directly with my fans and supporters, to let them in on parts of my life and my process they might otherwise not have access to. I like that I can curate and control my content in order to present myself in the best light.
Biggest plan for 2021?
Now, this is just the beginning of an idea, but I’d really love to shoot a music video underwater. I’m not a strong swimmer, but I met an amazing underwater photographer in Belize who gave me some tips. My goal is to work with him to bring my song “Big Tuna” to life. I’m feeling ambitious. I’m going big!
