Caitlin Min Fa joins us today to break down her latest release “Younger Self,” time on Reality TV, and power of music in her life. Read the rest of her story down below:
Thank you for joining us! Congratulations on the release of “Younger Self”! How are you feeling about sharing this single with the world?
Thank you so much for having me, appreciate the love!! I feel overwhelmingly amazingggg! I really didn’t know what to expect when releasing my debut “Younger Self” but it’s been such a heart warming feeling to see it being received in such a positive light. I’m proud of myself and I’m so grateful to be making people smile.
What does this single mean to you?
It means so much. I feel like I’ve shied away from writing and doing my own material for so long because I never thought that I could do it or that I would ever be good enough. So to put something out there that I’m so proud of, solidifies that I’m doing what I was born to do and lift others up.
How did you first get started in music?
Mum has always told me that I’ve been singing ever since I could speak. I grew up singing and performing around the house, in the shower, in the car. When I was 8, an opportunity arose for me to audition for the National Children’s Choir of Australia. From there, that’s when I fell in love.
Tell us about your journey on All Together Now AU! What was that experience like for you?
Oh my gosh, the whole process happened so quickly. I went to audition and was told that the filming dates would clash with my already pre-booked Europe trip. However, I just knew I had to do the show and therefore came home early.
I wanted to see how far I could push myself out of my comfort zone because again, I’ve always let fear hold me back. Despite being jet-lagged, it was one of the best decisions I ever made. I’ve always wanted to do a singing show like this and I learnt heaps about what happens behind the scenes with interviews, photoshoots, make up, cameras etc. Everybody was so lovely and I was able to perform in front of panel of one hundred pretty amazing and successful people, which I think is pretty cool haha.
What’s the most memorable experience from the show?
I think the most memorably thing about doing the show was just the whole process. From flying to Sydney, to checking into the hotel, having your breakfast time planned, pick up and travel to the studio scheduled, hair / make up, photoshoots, interviews, to jumping on that stage with all the lights and cameras around you and then getting room service after 😉 I really felt like a pop star haha was so much fun!!
Your Youtube channel is full of many amazing covers! Which cover has been your favorite so far?
Aw thank you! That’s definitely a hard question but I think I’ll have to go with my rendition of “Lotus Eaters” by Odette. It’s was such a different song for me to do but I thoroughly enjoyed learning and filming it! Odette also shared my video on instagram hehe.
Which artists have influenced you through your musical journey?
In my early days I was inspired by the likes of singer Jordin Sparks. Now it’s a combination of Anne Marie, Tori Kelly and Little Mix.
If you could collaborate with any celebrity, who would that be?
I feel like my “person” changes all the time haha, but currently I’d have to say Sam Fisher.
What’s the first thing you do when you sit down to write a song?
I get a track going or if I’m on piano/guitar, I put the chords on repeat and just start improving to see what melodies come out. If I like any, I find a groove and add lyrics to them 🙂
How has this year affected you creatively?
To be honest, it’s been the most perfect time to create for me. I’ve had more time to work on myself personally, and found that my creativity flowed a lot more naturally. I was able to pump out new songs every week and really dig deep on the artist I want to be. Finally getting my own stuff out for the world to hear was also huge for me. I only started writing one year ago, so I feel like I’ve grown heaps as both an artist and as a person.
Who has made the biggest impact on your life so far and how?
My partner Ryan has definitely impacted my life a lot. He’s always by my side and has really allowed me to find my true self over the years. I thrive off keeping busy and the need to be doing something all the time, so he reminds me to take a break and put myself first sometimes. He makes me appreciate the little things and to not take life too seriously. I love that he helps me be the best version of myself, both creatively and in life on the daily.
Thank you for speaking with us! For our final question, what do you hope to achieve in the next 5 years?
Appreciate your time and thanks again for having me! I would definitely love to be releasing a lot more music, leading to an EP and doing my own shows … that would be incredible! I’d also love to do a lot more travel, once things mellow out and cool down of course.
