Interview: I.Am.Tru.Starr Keeps His Head Up In New Album Release “VIVA”

I.Am.Tru.Starr is reeling in the excitement of the release of his newest album VIVA! Check out our interview disucssing the album and inspiration for music:

Hello I.Am.Tru.Starr! Thank you for being a part of our interview process! We are excited to have you!

Thank you very much! I’m happy to be here talking with y’all. Hope y’all are having a good day. Being safe and wearing your mask!

What was the first song you ever wrote?

Ha! The first song I ever wrote was definitely a rap song. I was like 11. Talking about a bunch of stuff I never did at that time. Trying to be my favorite rappers lol. It was dope but way too explicit for a child.

Which artists’ style do you love the most?

I’m a neo-soul baby and of course a hip-hop kid. So when I first started making music it was artists like D’Angelo and Bilal and Erykah Badu that was fueling that. But my father always made sure to put me on to the classic stuff. So George Clinton, Al Green, and Donny Hathaway are infused in me too. Then sprinkle in a little Jay Z and Nas and this what you get. Me!

How does the vibe of an audience affect your performance?

Depends on how much we got paid to be there lol. But in all seriousness yeah of course the crowd affects you but I just go out there and do my thing. If the crowd is hyped and into it, which they usually are. Then this is gonna be a great show. I might stage dive and everything lol. But if they are in there just blahhh and not giving me the energy I need, I just turn around and start performing and paying attention to my band and we work through it on the fly to turn the crowd back into a “Tru Starr” crowd. I sometimes find that if the audience is unfamiliar with my music they spend the first 2-3 songs trying to listen to my words and hang off each one I say. Like I could clearly look into the crowd and see people intently listening to hear what I’m saying. Because the music is so different. People seem to try and take it all in at one time. Especially if it’s the first time they’re hearing me and my band.

Do you get nervous for online performances?

The only thing that makes me nervous about online performances is if the WiFi is going to glitch out or not. Would hate for that to happen mid-performance. Other than that I don’t get nervous for performances. I was made for the stage.

What is your personal “walking down the aisle of a private jet” song?

Without question, It’s gotta be “Toast” by Koffee. That’s song feels like sunshine every time.

Please tell us about your latest project and how we can get involved!

My new album VIVA is out now! And available everywhere. Apple Music, Spotify, Tidal, etc… and it’s a project inspired about life and all the things that it’s made of. Both good and bad. We must appreciate it all. Tomorrow’s not promised and today’s not guaranteed. 2020 has definitely shown us all that. You can get involved by streaming the album and telling 10 of your friends to do the same because I’m sure you’ll all love it. Oh yeah…hit up my website www.iamtrustarr.com and buy some merch too. That would be the bee’s knees lol.
