Finding influence in Nas and Kendrick Lamar, independent artist Jay-M joins us to discuss his latest release “Til Death Do Us Part.”
Thank you for joining us! What inspired you to pursue music?
I had a passion for music since I was young, and I was inspired by my friends and family.
How did you get started?
I started rapping at the age of 9. I use to make YouTube videos freestyling with my cousin, and a few years later, I was inspired by my friends in high school to take it more seriously.
Let’s discuss your debut album “Til Death Do Us Part” – what does this album mean to you?
This album represents my passion for music and to inspire anyone to achieve their goals, no matter how many setbacks they encounter. Paint your canvas and walk in it.
Could you elaborate on the thought process and overall process that went into creating “Til Death Do Us Part”?
Observing my surroundings, what is happening in the world, and how rap music has evolved, inspired me to make this album.
What’s the first thing you do when you first sit down to write a new song?
I usually get something to eat, drink some ice coffee, play a few instrumentals to get in the zone, and then I start writing.
What’s something most people don’t know about you?
I’m very reserved.
How much freedom does working as an independent artist give you as an artist?
It gives me a lot of freedom, but I can’t let it slow down my progress. I have to continue to be consistent.
What makes your music unique? And how would you describe it?
My music is relatable to every demographic and crosses different genres. I skillfully bring listeners to my own world through masterful storytelling and composition techniques. The way I craft such vivid stories and turn them into unforgettable rhymes and melodies is unlike anything else.
What’s the most memorable experience you’ve had as an artist?
Putting out my first single, and hearing it on the radio.

What are your goals for the rest of 2020?
My goal is to put out more amazing quality content.
