Award-winning blind guitarist, songwriter, singer, composer, producer, radio and television personality, music columnist, educator, Joey Stuckey, shares his thoughts on the power of chasig one’s dreams. He shares his own tips on how he’s been able to succeed in life.
Hi Joey! Thanks for being here!
Glad to be part of the conversation!
What have you been most proud of lately?
Personally, I have lost 72 pounds since April of this year. Professionally, I am pleased that my single “You Know My Name” is receiving good airplay on over 50 terrestrial radio stations in North America, and my Christmas single “Santa That Plays Guitar” is doing well on North American radio with over 20 stations playing the song and around the same number of stations in the EU and UK.
How often do you set goals for yourself?
Everyday! I am always looking to improve myself or my recording studio and I also work hard to make sure I am of service to my community and others around me that are less fortunate! I have a head full of dreams that I am constantly trying to bring to fruition!
If you could have any superpower, what would it be and why?
Well, I would love to be able to fly, I mean who wouldn’t. However, as a blind person, that would probably be a bad idea unless I also had supervision LOL.
What role does music play in culture?
Great question and one I don’t get asked enough!
Musicians, or any kind of artist really, act as philosophers, historians, and creatives that introduce new ways of mankind understanding our place in the universe!
I also believe that we as artists can bring a special kind of comfort and healing to our fellow beings as music is a language that has no boundaries and no limits. I could go on and on, but I believe that art is just as important as science and is food and shelter for the soul!
If you had your own talk show, who would your first 3 guests be?
Well, I have had several shows of my own. I have had radio shows that have aired on the web and on terrestrial radio along with a web TV show and another on the local NBC station in my hometown. However, if I had a show with no limits and a dedicated staff of pros assisting me, like the major networks have, I would have to get the Dali Lama, Paul McCartney, and George Lucas. The why is easy, I admire them and think they could enlighten and entertain me and my audience!
What is something you think everyone should experience in their lifetime?
A real opportunity to touch their dream! If you are obsessed with an unbridled passion, you should have a shot at following that passion to its conclusive accomplishment. For me, that is meeting new people and sharing my story of triumph as a blind brain tumor survivor through my chosen craft of music!
It is okay to work hard and fail, you can learn just as much through failure as you can from success, but the truth is that many people never have the chance to truly pursue their dream and that isn’t right! I look forward to a world as imagined by Gene Roddenberry in the universe of Star Trek where humanity has the opportunity for true exploration. Whether that is exploring the stars or one’s own inner potential!
